The headlines should read "Officer attached by armed student with baseball bat at Roosevelt High School".
Why is it the victim always has to defend themself after an attach? Student or not actions have circumstances.

Why did the Officer have to shoot the student? Why didn't the Officer use his taser? Why didn't the Officer use his baton. WHY do we immediatley scrutinize the Officer?? The question I first posed is why was the Officer attacked? Although the outcome was unfortunate it sounds like the Officer had no other option.

I honestly believe that if officers are to be armed on a high school campus that their guns should not have live ammunition. We need to legislate changes for them to carry rubber bullets or other forms of restraint that will be less fatal when used to defend themselves or dispurse matters. I am at a loss for the family and for the officer to have been involved in such a violent act on a high school campus.

It is unfortunate that a young man is dead, but you can’t strike an officer in the head with a bat and not expect bad things. If you second-guess the officer’s choice to fire, you have that luxury. Our police are not disposable! They have the right to defend themselves and a bat is a LETHAL weapon. Have someone hit you in the head with a bat and then make a split second decision on what to do. The officer did the right thing; it is just unfortunate that he had to protect himself on a high school campus. Lay the blame where it belongs at the feet of this young man, he made the choice to strike an officer with a weapon.

What was a student with know psychological problems doing out of some type of highly supervised program at a public school? I haven’t heard the question of the students at the schools safety brought up yet. Luckily he attacked an officer who could defend himself, instead of a student or students who had no such means. I think it is highly irresponsible of the school district to allow students, on medication for psychological issues to be able to be on the campus. I feel the officer acted with the appropriate use of force. I saw a family member state that he could have be tazed or hit with a stick, please! Officers are not paid to fight even fights. The officer’s life was at stake, he could have been killed or left as a vegetable from a blow to the head. I’m just thankful that the officer is ok, and not permenitly harmed from this encounter.

Officer Perry was probably commiting a crime; carrying a concealed weapon without a permit. Detectives carry concealed and are required to have a permit. A uniformed officer's regulation gun must be exposed. This may seem trivial, but, the officer was toting a throw down on his ankle!

Why weren't any eye witnesses or the parents interviewed by you? Did the boy strike the officer from behind before the officer was aware of his presence? Did the officer have previous run ins with the student prevoking the attack? Did the officer have a chance to flee and call for backup? It is reaching to site 2005 and 2007 incidents, that were minor enough to have not warranted charges, as factors. Obviously the boy wasn't a gang member or it would have been highlighted. The officer should have been arrested pending investigation on the grounds of the hidden weapon, not commended before there was time to look for and interview all witnesses. It sounds like this death is being swept under the carpet by the media. It is interesting that the picture used is a bad picture of the boy, wasn't a good one or at least a school picture available? They don't even shoot known murderers with real bullets unless they have too. If the officer was authorized to have 2 weapons why wasn't one of them a stun gun or pepper spray. If the area is so bad ARMED police need to be on that campus why weren't there 2 of them? Looks like lack of common sense, and planning, has left Fresno wide open for another justified law suite.
When we loose the right to question the police we will be living in a "police state".

How can anyone think this was a use of excessive force when a young man with no respect for law inforcement attacks a police officer with a bat. Had this young mans attempt to injur the officer would have been achived and the officer lay knocked out or dead then the individual has the opption to take his gun and do more damage. I hate to see some one loose a life but a stupid act such as that agianst a police officer deserves the out come.

You have to question the officers actions, The big question is WHY? Why did he use his fire Arm? and not his Taser to subdue this student.
Why was the knife allowed onto the High school.
Why did the officer with there trainer with weapons, not Aim to fire at some other part of this victims body? Why in the chest?
Why wast back-up called?
The officer had plenty of options just poor judgment. I find it hard to believe that the officer made the right choice.

The kid attacked the officer from behind with a bat, hitting him on the head. He was getting ready to hit the officer again, while the officer was lying dazed on the ground. A blow to the head from a baseball bat wielded by a 250 lb. kid can kill anyone. The officer had the right to defend himself. He did the right thing. I hope this doesn't turn into an expensive lawsuit against the school that my tax dollars will have to pay to defend. When are people going to learn to take responsibility for their own choices and actions? Even emotionally disturbed people know right from wrong, and know that it is not acceptable to physically attack and possibly kill others who have done them no harm.

Wow!! where to start?....why is the NAACP involved? I thought the young man was Hispanic? When the NAACP spokeswoman was speaking she stated that the family wanted to keep it personal and to themselves.....keep yourself and your family off the street corners asking for money. That 17 yr old sophomore knew what he was doing..he used a modified weapon. Perry is a police officer, not a security guard. Once the young man hit him, all bets are off. What if the young man used the weapon against another student? or a teacher? Perry is not to blame.

Ok, rubber bullets? That is ridiculous. Then when someone arms comes to the campus and tries to kill people, what is that officer supposed to do? When someone tries to hit him in the head with a blunt object (ie. baseball bat), what is he supposed to do? And as far as the gun on his ankle, it is perfectly legal. In the state of California any sworn full time peace officer can carry a loaded firearm (concealed or visible) anywhere in the State of California. There is also Federal law now that allows Peace Officers to carry in every state. Get your facts before you post your inaccurate information.

What a shame that we have to have police officers on campus. Do you think this officer is glad that he has killed a young person. The bat would have been concealed in the boy's backpack why would he have cut off the end why would he bring it to school to me this is a plan to attach someone luckily it was a trained officer and not a teacher or another student. The responiblity lies with the parents they needed to be more aware of his needs and to make sure he was taken care of the responiblity of the school is to educate, now with students like this on campus we need to have protection for our teachers and students at all times. May God Bless this police officer and his family.

There is no question that Perry had to defend himself. in so doing, he revealed several problems:
1. He was illegally carrying a concealed weapon; his ankle gun.
2. His legal service gun was so fragile as to be worthless in combat.
